You will have SO MANY times in life when you don’t know how. THAT’S OK, because others can show you the way.
I created this video largely to highlight yet another dichotomy I’ve observed within the professional world. On the one hand, we do an excellent job telling people to be lifelong learners and to seek out good mentors. And the wisdom behind that is clear when you focus on Luke 6:40 — as the teacher is, so too, shall the student become. The way we are trained has a massive influence on the way we develop and what we become capable of doing.
But on the other hand, our focus on independence can get in the way. If we believe based on the American spirit of grit that we must forge our own path by our own merit, seeking a mentor becomes fearsome. It signals we do not, on our own, know. That we can’t (yet). And no one wants to look stupid or incapable when, in theory, we’re supposed to make it alone.
So, I want to reassure you that seeking out training is not a weakness. It is a path by which you can become that which you want to be. But in that reality, there is also a responsibility. Because a teacher can have such a profound influence on the way you grow and change, you must be exceedingly careful about which mentors you accept. There must be incredible wisdom and discernment, not only about their skills and experience, but also about their character.
But now, I want you to think hard about the good teachers you’ve had. Consider how they’ve shaped you. Share with them (and others) about the biggest impacts they’ve left on you.
