I don’t go a day without seeing some message that we have to pick some new way to be. In our culture of prized control of the self, we like the idea that we can decide what to become, learn, or believe.
But what if, in order to change in the right way, the only choice you had to make was to allow God to make it happen?
It’s an infinitely smarter option than trying to choose for yourself. After all, God is the one with perspective about how all the puzzle pieces fit together and what your purpose is. He’s the One Who knows what you’ll need and can guarantee you get it at the right time.
Why we chase the wrong change
Most of us resist change that’s truly necessary and choose shifts we see as bringing pleasure because that necessary change can be excruciating. We can lose friends or money or all kinds of things. That’s why we need God, because only He can make that hurt tolerable.

Let God finish the job He started with you
So many times, I tried different paths thinking they would work. I heard the gurus and thought they knew something. I exhausted myself trying to follow what they said was easy. Like Solomon, I realized it was chasing nothing. I didn’t feel any better or get where they said I would.
I reached a point where I had no energy left to try to change in the way the world said I should. It was only then that I felt like the whole problem had been that what the world wanted wasn’t the way God had set me up to be. The only way to be whole was to stop chasing the world and let God finish His job.
God will finish the job with you, too. Things might get messy — the butterfly is essentially goo before God puts it back together the right way. But at the end of it all, you’ll fly.
