I’ll be honest and tell you that this is one of the hardest things for me to be disciplined about. My brain is conditioned to want to put out fires as soon as I see them. I am always watching for them. I’m always trying to get ahead of them. I’m constantly trying to create contingency plans “just in case,” which means my to-do list can smother me…
…if I LET it.
You always have a choice
See, even as I pick up my pen or click over to my Google Calendar tab, I have a choice about whether I control the list or the list controls me. So do you.
I know, I know. It FEELS like if you don’t make that list, all Hades will break loose.
It won’t.
It’s just a feeling.
I’ve heard gurus say that, realistically, you really should have only three things on your to-do list anyway, assuming you’re prioritizing properly. Past that, you’ll typically run out of time and you’re wading into goals that really aren’t significant enough.
7 questions to keep your to-do list teeny and keep God present
✝ Is this task foundational (i.e., it’s a prerequisite to be able to do other things)?
✝ Does the task align with keeping my relationship with God healthy?
✝ Does the task influence others?
✝ Is there anyone I can delegate to, or is this something I have to personally address?
✝ What will the short-term and long-term impacts be if the task gets done?
✝ Is the task item a true necessity or just a want-to-do?
✝ What’s the core why behind the task (hint: Can you ask why at least 5 times?)?
The world is busy and it will pressure us to behave as human doings instead of human beings. Remember God made you to do specific great things, not everything. 😉 Stop your list early and give Him time.
